BELL X-1
FIRST TO REACH THE SPEED OF SOUND!
OCTOBER 14, 1947, USHERED IN A NEW AGE OF AVIATION. PILOTING
THE BELL X-1, CAPT. CHUCK YEAGER SHATTERD THE INVISIBLE BARRIER IN
THE SKY, CREATING THE FIRST MAN MADE SONIC BOOM. HE HAD
ACHEVED MACH 1.07 AND BECOME THE FASTEST MAN IN THE WORLD.
THE X-1 WAS LOADED INTO THE BOMB BAY OF A MODIFIED B-29
WHICH CARRIED IT ALOFT TO 20,000 FEET ABOVE THE CALIFORNIA
DESERT. AT 8,000 FEET, CHUCK WOULD CLIMB DOWN A LADDER INTO THE
X-1 AND PREPAIR FOR HIS FLIGHT. AT 20,000 FEET, THE PILOT WOULD
DROP THE X-1 LIKE A BOMB. AFTER A BREIF FREEFALL, CHUCK WOULD
FIRE THE ROCKET ENGINES, CLIMBING TO 43,000 FEET, AND SECURING
HIMSELF A PLACE IN AVIATION HISTORY FOREVER.
THE REASON CHUCK NAMED HIS PLANE THE 'GLAMOROUS GLENNIS" WAS
THAT HE FELT THAT ANY PLANE NAMED AFTER HIS WIFE WOULD ALWAYS
BRING HIM HOME SAFELY.
